Writing and Grammar classes

What does a writing class  include?

  • 30 weeks of instruction

  • Individual or small group

  • Personalized video feedback on every assignment submitted

  • Individualized checklists for each assignment: each learner is working on their own personalized goals

Sherri Habermehl is an accredited Registered Instructor through the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW).
 

Susan Barton, the developer of the Barton Reading & Spelling System, recommends IEW's writing courses as an explicit and structured writing intervention for dyslexic learners who have completed Level 4 of the Barton Reading & Spelling System and who are seeking writing instruction.
 

The group classes listed below are tailored for dyslexic learners or people with other reading difficulties who have reached Level 4 (or higher) of the Barton system and who want to focus on improving their grammar and/or writing skills.

​Fix It! Grammer
Nose Tree(Level 1)

This class offers students a gentle introduction to the fundamentals of grammar. As learners hunt for and correct errors, they learn the basic parts of speech, end-mark punctuation, phrases, clauses, and homophones. No prior grammar knowledge is needed.​
 

This 30-week course is tailored for dyslexic learners or people with other writing challenges. This class provides extra support to build confidence and master grammar concepts!

Requirements:

  • Age 10-14 years old

  • Completed Level 4 of the Barton Reading & Spelling System
    (or equivalent skills)

     

Group classes begin on September 5, 2025.

Individual Classes

Individualized classes/tutoring sessions for writing can start at anytime throughout the year. ​Contact Habermehl Reading for more information about pricing, and setting up an individualized experience for your learner.​

Adventures In Writing

In this theme-based writing curriculum, learners write about adventurous topics such as Roman hoplites, tornadoes, Leif Eriksson, and other interesting subjects.

 

This 30-week course is tailored for dyslexic learners or people with other writing challenges. Students build confidence with step-by-step guidance and a structured approach. Each paper gets personalized video feedback.

 

Requirements:

  • Age 9-13 years old

  • Completed Level 4 of the Barton Reading & Spelling System (or equivalent skills)
