Online Orton-Gillingham tutoring for people with dyslexia or other reading difficulties.
At Habermehl Reading, we teach reading, spelling, and writing to students and adults with dyslexia or other reading difficulties.
We use an Orton-Gillingham approach to reading instruction, which is a structured literacy approach that has been helping children and adults learn to read for over 90 years.
This method isn't new, we're just working to make it accessible to everyone through online tutoring.
When dyslexic learners have enough skills to read and spell, we teach writing using an explicit, systematic, and incredibly structured method.
Steven started with us in grade 5. He was tested to read at a grade 1 level. He struggled with reading so much that he couldn't text his friends or mom.
After 2 years of tutoring 2 times each week, Steven can now read and spell words like ADVENTUROUS, EXPENDITURES, and HYPHENATION, knowing how to add prefixes and suffixes like he has a Black Belt in spelling!
Laura started tutoring with us in the middle of grade 4. When she started, she identified herself as a non-reader.
After 18 months of tutoring 3 times per week, Laura can now read and spell words like FREQUENCY, VENDETTA, and ELEGANT, knowing which vowel to use even in unaccented syllables, and when a letter needs to be doubled.
Kelsey started tutoring with us 12 months ago. When he started he could not even read 3 letter words like SIT (he read as "sight") and MAT (he read as "mate"). He was unsure when to use a short or long vowel sound.
After 1 year of tutoring Kelsey can now read and spell 5 and 6 letter one-syllable words with short vowels accurately, not only in lists but also in phrases and stories with fluency. He is starting to WOW his parents by learning some tricky spelling patterns, like when to use a C, and K, or a CK when spelling the /k/ sound.
